Description

A study of the history, structure, and functions of corrections as well as the legal and philosophical basis for the punishment of criminal offenders

Learning Objectives

  • Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding of the historical nature of corrections in America.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the role the American corrections system has had in the development of modern criminal justice.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of social, political, and individual factors that influence the operations of the American correctional system.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the functions of each component of the American correctional system - jails, prisons, probation, parole, and diversion programs.
  • Students will develop and implement critical thinking techniques to analyze the primary objective of the American correctional system – to punish or rehabilitate
