Provides an overview of reading development and foundational skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • LO1: Describe the stages of reading development and explain how foundational reading skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) are acquired.
  • LO2: Identify common reading difficulties and describe how they impact the acquisition of foundational literacy skills in early learners.
  • LO3: Analyze how each component of the reading process contributes to overall reading proficiency, particularly for students with unique learning needs.
