HADM 3302 - Health Care Economics

Description

This course is intended for those interested in an analytical approach to the study of medical services, and, through the use of numerous applications and figures, to illustrate the usefulness of economics as is applicable to the understanding of public policy issues affecting this sector.


Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Understand the historical trends in medical expenditures
  2. Apply basic economic tools to the healthcare industry
  3. Understand cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, and cost-utility analysis
  4. Discuss regulatory approaches for controlling rising costs
  5. Recognize how medical care differs from other industry
  6. Understand the government‰лЊs role in the health care market
  7. Be able to evaluate opposing theories of government behavior
  8. Understand the allocation of resources to medical care
  9. Describe the various medical care markets
  10. Consider the appropriateness of health insurance coverage
  11. Assess the supply and demand within the medical markets
  12. Evaluate marketplace competition in health care
  13. Consider manpower shortages (physician, nurse, and other health care employees)
  14. Understand the profit power of the pharmaceutical industry
