MATH 2008 - Foundations of Numbers and Operations

Description

This course is an introductory mathematics course for early childhood education majors. This course will emphasize the understanding and use of the major concepts of numbers and operations. As a general theme, strategies of problem solving will be used and discussed in the context of various topics.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • LO1: Demonstrate conceptual understanding of number systems by explaining the development and structure of whole numbers, integers, rational, and irrational numbers, including place value and numeration systems.
  • LO2: Use models, manipulatives, and standard algorithms to represent and solve problems involving operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and numbers in alternate bases.
  • LO3: Identify and explain common problem-solving strategies and reasoning processes used in solving mathematical problems involving ratios, percents, and proportional reasoning, and evaluate student strategies for accuracy and misconceptions.
